Kiana Atkins, NIH’s Black Employment Portfolio Principal Strategist, believes an organization that strives for equity and inclusion should offer “menstrual leave” to “employees” (notably, not “women” because they probably can’t define that). Offering a monthly vacation to women, or even creating spaces to nap as also suggested, is horrible for an organization’s productivity and has no place in the federal government. Period.
Kiana Atkins has experienced what she calls “black fatigue,” which she writes is “stress that results in extreme exhaustion and causes mental, physical, and spiritual maladies that are passed down from generation to generation.”
She is the Principal Strategist for Black Employment at NIH, but says that “being labeled as the official representative in your community and then becoming the go-to person whenever someone has a question about people of your race” can lead to black fatigue. It seems like she’s advocating for eliminating her position.
