Embedding Equity in Every Aspect of our Lives

In the Agency for Children and Families’ “National Call to Action on Equity” webinar, Dia Harris was introduced as what seems like the Godfather of DEI at the agency. Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for ACF introduced Mr. Harris:

“Harris joined ACF as our first ever CEO to drive the implementation of DEI initiatives across the agency… Under Dia’s leadership, we are institutionalizing equity throughout our operations and making it an everyday reality for our staff and the children and families we serve.” (30:39)

Mr. Harris then proceeds to introduce himself, including his pronouns (he/him/il/el) and what he looks like (“unapologetically a black man”)before going into his call to action for the agency to “embed equity into every aspect of our lives.” DEI isn’t just a career for Dia Harris. He sees it as mission outside of work, too.

“My pronouns are he, him, il, and el. I am unapologetically a black man with medium brown skin complexion…” (32:05)
“We must also embed equity into every aspect of our lives, from our personal interactions to our professional endeavors. Equity is not just a goal to be achieved by principle, but it’s to be lived by. By integrating equity in our daily practices and decision-making processes, we can create lasting and building a more equitable society for future generations. Together, let us commit to educate, explore, and embed equity in all that we do.” (38:27)

Hiding His DEI to Save His Job

Maybe it’s merely coincidence, but just one day after President Trump’s executive order eliminating DEI offices took effect, any mention of diversity, equity, and inclusion was removed from Dia Harris’s LinkedIn employment history, including changes to job titles and completely eliminating his consulting business. For a mission he’s so passionate about, it seems like it’s not nearly as important as keeping his job.
